Description: Pigeons exhibit what appears to be superstitious behaviour.
In his studies of pigeons in feeding cages, the behavioural scientist BF Skinner noted that some birds displayed what could be termed 'superstitious behaviour' while waiting for food. One would walk in circles in its cage, another would swing its head like a pendulum.
Skinner came to believe that the pigeons were trying to influence the feeding schedule by performing unrelated actions, and thought this might be an explanation of superstitious behaviour in humans. Other scientists have disputed that anything superstitious was going on at all.
