Origin: Ancient, Everywhere
Description: The full moon causes mental disturbance and criminal tendencies.
The moon has been accused of disturbing the minds of men since ancient times - and in the case of werewolves, more than just minds. In ancient Greece and Rome it was also the occasion of a bacchanalia, which is a classical name for a drunken outdoor party.
The English words lunacy and lunatic are derived from the Latin word for the moon, Luna. In the 20th Century some researchers tried (without success) to find a link between patterns of human behaviour and the lunar cycle - a theory known as the Lunar Effect, which speculates that crime and hospital admissions would rise during a full moon.
