Superstitions from around the world . . . what brings good luck . . . what brings bad luck?

SUPERSTITION:  ECLIPSE OF THE SUN

Description: An eclipse of the sun is an omen of evil

Origin: Ancient, Everywhere

You can see how the ancients would get the idea that there was something seriously wrong when the moon blotted out the sun, and eclipses are still seen as portents of ill-fortune in parts of the world today. A prominent superstition in India states that a pregnant woman should not an eclipse, nor step outside during an eclipse - or her child will be born with marks all over its body.

In contrast, eclipses of the moon by the earth's shadow never get anyone very excited.
