Description: It is bad luck to stick chopsticks upright into food, especially into a bowl of rice.
Origin: Ancient China, and other parts of Asia.
It is said that upright chopsticks resemble the incense sticks at Chinese funerals, where a bowl of rice is given placed on an altar as an offering. In the same tradition, food should not be passed from one set of chopsticks to another - because this is done only with the bones of cremated bodies at funerals.
