Description: Chameleons are evil, lizards are wise
Chameleons are greatly feared in parts of West Africa. In pre-Christian time they were believed to be sacred to the sun, and it was said they never had to eat. Later Christians missionaries in Africa associated Chameleons with the devil - who could change his appearance to deceive mankind - and they have been stuck with that reputation ever since.
Lizards have a better reputation. In ancient Egypt and Greece they represented divine wisdom and good fortune, and they were revered as gods by the peoples of some of Pacific islands.
