Description: It is said to be bad luck if you see bats flying and hear their cries.
Origin: Medieval Christian.
In Middle Age Europe bats were suspected of being witches in disguise. Bats are also feared because it is thought some species bite and suck the blood of sleeping victims; and this gory superstition is even better for being partly true.
But the bat is a lucky symbol in China, where the word for 'bat' sounds the same as the word for 'good fortune.' A mountain in the garden of the Summer Palace in Beijing was built in the shape of a bat for this reason.
